Calicut University, caste discrimination against students; Two Professor forced into leave

Two teachers of Calicut University were sent on forced leave after complaints surfaced against them including those relating to caste discrimination. Head of the Department of Malayalam, Dr. L. Thomaskutty and Botany Department Assistant Professor Dr. M. Shamina were asked to.go on leave by the university authorities.

A committee appointed by the syndicate is to submit a report in this regard within seven days and the teachers are send on leave pending enquiry.

A complaint was lodged against Thomaskutty by research candidate in Malayalam department, P Sindhu. It was said in the complaint that her thesis report was deliberately delayed and she was subjected to discrimination by him. Sindhu had made a post on social media in this regard which was widely discussed.

Meanwhile, four research students of Botany department filed the complaint against Shamina. It was said in the complaint that she made casteist remarks against them and tried to defame them. They also said that obstacles were created by Shamina to delay their thesis reports.

Allegations had then surfaced that these were the cases of ill treatment of Dalit students. After the incidents gained public attention, a special committee was formed by syndicate to probe the complaints. But SFI, AKRSA staged blockade of the Vice Chancellor demanding an enquiry by keeping away the said teachers.

Following this a discussion was held and it was decided to send the teachers on forced leave. Meanwhile, Shamina responded that she didn’t obtain any official information on this. She also said that she will be present for duty in the coming days.
