The investigation team on Saturday arrested three key in connection with the six deaths in a family at Koodathayi. Jolly, wife of the deceased Roy, Mathew-jewellery employee who supplied cyanide and goldsmith Prajukumar.
Mathew confessed that he is a friend of Jolly and supplied cyanide to her. Jolly had earlier confessed that she attempted to murder Roy’s sister as well. Jolly’s children and brother were also interrogated.
Over the period of 14 years, six members of a family at Koodathayi in Kozhikode district was killed under similar circumstances. Jolly’s first husband Roy Thomas, his father and retired employee of education department Ponnamattam Tom Thomas, mother and retd. teacher Annamma, Annamma’s brother Mathew Machadi, Tom Thomas’ nephew’s wife Sily, her one-year-old daughter Alphonse had died in similar circumstances, but years apart.
One year later after Sily’s death, Roy Thomas’ wife Jolly and Sily’s husband Shaju got married.
The first to die was Annamma, on September 22, 2002 which was followed by her husband Tom Thomas, who died on September 26, 2008. Then on October 30, 2011, their son Roy collapsed and died. Their relatives raised suspicion, and his body was sent for a post mortem which confirmed the presence of cyanide in his body.
Roy’s demise was followed by the death of his maternal uncle M.M. Mathew on April 24, 2014. Mathe had earlier raised suspicion on the death of Roy. The same year, Alphonse, the one-year-old daughter of Sily and Shaju who is a nephew of Tom Thomas, died on May 3. Sily passed away on January 11, 2016.
The police began the probe after Rojo, the younger brother of Roy who is in the USA, filed a complaint. The police on Friday had exhumed their bodies for a scientific examination.
