Child Welfare Committee(CWC) General Secretary SP Deepak on Wednesday resigned from his post over the controversy regarding children eating sand in Kaithamukku. It is learnt that CPM had asked Deepak to submit a resignation letter after the controversy gave a bad reputation to the state government.
Deepak handed over his resignation letter to CM Pinarayi Vijayan who is the president of CWC. Earlier, Deepak had stated that the children adopted by CWC survived by eating sand. This comment by the CWC general secretary had put the government on the defensive as several international media went on to report this. Following this, the CPM leadership demanded Deepak’s resignation as his statement affected the reputation of the state which is known to provide the best health facilities in the nation.
While admitting his mistake, Deepak said that he was misled about the incident by some of the officials and social workers. He also said it was a failure from his part not to probe the incident by himself.
