Plainclothes policemen conducted a search at the residence of Osmania University professor and Nadusthuna Telangana newspaper editor C Kasim in early hours of Saturday and took him under custody. Kasim was also recently elected as one of the office-bearers of the revolutionary writers association, Virasam.
It is not the first time that Kasim has come under scrutiny of the Telangana police. Earlier, the Mulugu police of Medak district had registered a sedition case against Kasim suspecting that he was working as a courier to Maoists.
During the searches on Saturday, police seized some books and other material from his residence. Later, the police took Kasim into custody and shifted him to an undisclosed location for questioning. As the news of the detention of Kasim spread, many students of Osmania University students took out rally in the campus to protest against it. Police detained some of the protesting students and shifted to a police station.
CPI party leader Narayana alleged that the government is deliberately harassing intellectuals on pretext of having Maoist connection and registering false cases against them. He demanded the government to stop the searches and release Kasim.
