Depressed over her long time lover’s withdrawal from marriage in the name of dowry, a girl committed suicide by consuming poisonous fruit. She took poison on the day the would-be bride’s family came to her lover’s residence. The deceased has been identified as Archana (22), daughter of Vishwanathan and Geetha of Murikkil Veettil in Arattupuzha Panchayat. She was a fourth-year BSc Nursing student.
Archana was admitted to Alappuzha medical college hospital after she became ill and passed away the same night. A suicide note and WhatsApp voice notes were recovered by the police.
According to the police, Archana became close with Syam while she was in plus one. After plus two, Syam went abroad. Archana pursued BSc Nursing at a private institution in Kollam. Syam came to Archana’s house with his friend a year back with a marriage proposal. Following this, Syam’s parents came to her house. Syam’s parents said they expect 101 sovereign gold and a car as dowry as his sister was given the same during her marriage. Archana’s parents said they cannot afford that.
However, the relationship continued and Syam went back abroad. On returning from the Middle East, Syam forwarded a picture of him standing with another girl to Archana. As per Archana’s family, when she told him she would commit suicide, Syam’s response to her was to go and die.
The girl’s father Vishwanathan said he would lodge a complaint with the chief minister to find those responsible for the death of her daughter. A case has been reigstered by Thrikkunnappuzha police. Sister: Arya.
